Valldemossa is a municipality of the Mallorca island situated at 17 km from the capital, Palma, and 435 meters above sea level, is part of the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range that stretches along 80 km throughout the northern coast of the island. The origin of the name (Mussa Valley) is explained by the Islamic influence of Mallorca. Valldemossa is rich in sources and is surrounded by a rich and luxuriant vegetation (olive trees, oaks and almond trees, etc..), So it offers the visitor a sense of calm and tranquility. Valldemossa has a special charm with steep narrow streets. It is preserved in the town the birthplace of the most revered holy in Mallorca, Catherine Thomas, who was born in 1531 and died in Valldemossa. The church, originally from s. XIII, although extensively renovated in the s. XVIII its a must see. The main attraction of Valldemossa has been and is, without doubt, the monastery of La Cartuja. Here we visit the rooms where they stayed the representatives of French Romanticism in mid-century XIX, the famous Polish composer Frederic Chopin and his partner, writer Aurore Dupin, better known by his alias of George Sand. The traces of their brief (December 1838 – February 1839), although intense, stay has led since then a ceaseless pilgrimage.
Other famous people have left their indelible mark among valldemossins: The famous Ruben Dario Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos, Santiago Rusiñol, Archduke Luis Salvador of Austria. At 5 km of this town is located Miramar, the former residence of Luis Salvador. A long time ago the eminent philosopher Ramon Llull had founded (1276) here a Franciscan monastery in which he developed the first school of Oriental languages in Europe, designed to instruct the missionaries for Africa.
Another place to visit is the Hermitage. It is located between the sea and the mountains, at the foot of the Tramuntana mountains, 2 km towards Deia, and integrated into a landscape of incomparable beauty and from which you can enjoy an incredible panorama view, there is a small community of majorca hermits that devote their lives to prayer and penance. Please respect the silence during the visit. On the other hand, the fabulous views over the Mediterranean will open your mind to harmony and tranquility. In short, an incredible town urbanistically unchanged for centuries, inhabited by warm loving people respectful with visitors and tourists.
A tangled route between the Serra de Tramuntana and the Mediterranean Sea leads to the small fishing port of Valldemossa, known by its beauty. The port housed a quiet fishing community. Today, most of their homes have become the second summer residence for locals or tourists.
