Serra de Tramuntana

Serra de Tramuntana is a mountain range which forms the north-east coast of Majorca, its called this way because the wind coming from that direction. This mountain range has a length of 100 km apporx. and a maximum amplitude of 20 km. It has 15 peaks over 1000 meters, the most important of these are: Galatzó (1.026m), Teix (1.064m), the Serra d’Alfàbia (1.069m), L’Ofra (1.090m ) Tossals Verds

(1.028m), the Puig Major d’en Torella (1.443m), the Puig Major de Maçanella (1.348m), the Puig Roig (1.003m) and Tomir (1.102m).

This massif has abundant limestone karst areas with caves, chasms (one of the most famous is the “Cova de sa Campana” of -305 m) in the 90′s it was discovered one of the deepest in Europe, in the vicinity of Puig Tomir, about 2,200 m (explored). Water has achieved impressive valleys and canyons, object of great attraction for the hiker, the best known and recognized worldwide for its high difficulty is “Sa Fosca” running from the Gorg Blau reservoir towards the Torrent de Lluc, there they unite to form the famous Torrent de Pareis, with vertical walls up to 700 m, which carves a wonderful way to Sa Calobra.

The coast is dotted with towers and lighthouses, buildings of great historical value. Among the towers, the sa Calobra tower, La torre picada, tower Pedrissa and the one in Sa Mola. The most interesting lightshouse are the one of Formentor,  de la Creu (in the  Port de Sóller) and the two existing on the island of Dragonera.

One of the main values ​​of this massif is the landscape. There are several lookout point, from where the views are splendid, as Ses Tres Creus, in Sóller, where the view is fantastic.
Here are the three major reservoirs in Mallorca: Cuber, Gorg Blau and the one for military use of the base of Puig Major, smaller.

On this mountainous stretch we can locate up to 18 municipalities of great beauty, where tradition, cuisine and character of people have not been altered by the passage of time.
In June 2011, the Serra de Tramuntana was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.
